Google is expanding sponsored advertisement experiences across its AI-powered Search environment into international markets, betting on generative artificial intelligence to open fresh commercial opportunities as growth in its legacy search advertising segment decelerates.
Announced during Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings call, this global monetization roll-out brings AI mode ads and multi-turn ad formats to users worldwide, scaling alongside shifting user behavior toward longer, conversational, and multimodal search queries.
In response to changing user search patterns and a noticeable slowdown in core search ad expansion, Google is aggressively accelerating its monetization efforts around artificial intelligence. The technology giant confirmed that ads within its AI-driven Search experiences are officially reaching international markets. This expansion represents a key pivot in how Google intends to convert its heavily invested generative AI infrastructure into sustainable revenue growth.
A Strategic Shift in Global Search Monetization
Google’s drive to commercialize generative AI search capabilities is expanding beyond initial testing grounds. Philipp Schindler, Google’s Chief Business Officer, outlined the initiative during the company’s recent investor call, noting that high-quality commercial placements are being scaled significantly across broader user bases and query types.
"We are now scaling high-quality ads within AI overviews in AI mode to more users and queries," Schindler explained. "This includes taking our monetization footprint global for the first time. Today, we’re announcing the expansion of ads in AI mode into international markets alongside multi-turn ads and AI mode in the U.S."
According to Google, early metrics indicate strong advertiser and user adoption for these next-generation formats. Schindler highlighted that click-through rates for sponsored product listings embedded within AI Mode are already matching performance metrics seen in traditional organic listings. Furthermore, internal user research demonstrates that consumers view these integrated advertisements as contextually relevant to their conversational queries.
This global push builds directly upon ad capabilities introduced earlier in May, where Google unveiled Gemini-powered formats such as conversational discovery ads capable of responding dynamically to follow-up questions, as well as sponsored recommendations integrated directly inside AI-generated answers.
Financial Performance and Decelerating Core Growth
The monetization push comes at a critical juncture for Google’s parent company, Alphabet. In its third-quarter financial results, Alphabet reported total revenue of $127.6 billion, marking a 25% increase year over year. Despite the top-line performance, Alphabet shares fell 8% following the announcement due to concerns surrounding the trajectory of core search revenue.
Google Search advertising revenue grew 12% year over year during the third quarter. While positive, this represents a continued deceleration when compared to the 17% growth reported in the second quarter and the 19% growth achieved in the first quarter of the year. This gradual moderation in traditional ad expansion adds heightened urgency for Google to successfully monetize its expanding suite of AI features.
Beyond the core search business, Alphabet’s Google Services division—which encompasses Search activities—generated $96.3 billion in revenue, up 11% year over year. Meanwhile, Google Cloud demonstrated remarkable acceleration, surging 103% year over year to reach $30.7 billion in revenue.
Evolving Search Behaviors and Multimodal Engagement
Despite financial pressures surrounding search growth percentages, overall engagement across Search continues to reach new records. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that total search queries experienced their fastest year-over-year growth rate in five years, though exact growth figures were not disclosed.
Pichai attributed this surge directly to AI features altering fundamental user interaction models. Generative search capabilities encourage users to submit far more complex and detailed inquiries than legacy keywords permitted.
"[Search] is bringing the benefits of AI to more people than any other product in the world," Pichai informed investors. "People are using our AI features more, searching in entirely new ways. Their queries are longer, personalized, and multimodal."
Key user interaction findings reported by Google include:
- Query Complexity: Queries submitted in AI Mode are, on average, three times longer than traditional search engine inputs.
- Multimodal Adoption: Globally, one in five searches conducted within AI Mode incorporates voice, visual image inputs, or document uploads.
- Visual Search Scaling: Google has surpassed 50 billion visual search queries per month.

Broader Technological Ecosystem and Future Outlook
The global monetization rollout follows a significant quarter of product debuts and ecosystem updates across Google's artificial intelligence portfolio. During the same period, Google released its Gemini 4 Argon model, saw its standalone Gemini consumer app reach 1 billion monthly active users, and introduced its hardware hardware refresh with the Pixel 11 product lineup.
Key Takeaway for Digital Ecosystems:
As user query behavior transforms into multi-turn, multimodal conversations, Google’s strategy relies heavily on integrating relevant ad placements directly inside AI-generated summaries and conversational flows globally, ensuring its commercial ad machine adapts alongside user interactions.
