Google Launches Global AI Search Ads as Growth Slows

Google is officially expanding its AI-powered Search advertising footprint into international markets. Facing decelerating growth in its traditional search advertising business, the search giant is betting heavily that generative AI features—including AI Overviews and conversational query formats—can open up vital new avenues for monetization across the globe.

During Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings announcement, company executives outlined major updates to how sponsored content is integrated into next-generation search tools. As core advertising revenues show signs of moderating, Google is accelerating efforts to turn its expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem into a direct engine for advertising revenue.

Financial Pressures and Decelerating Core Ad Growth

Alphabet delivered strong headline figures for its third quarter, reporting $127.6 billion in total revenue, representing a 25% increase year over year. Despite this solid top-line performance, market reaction was cautious, sending Alphabet shares down 8% following the release. The primary source of concern among investors was the continued deceleration within Google’s core Search advertising business.

Growth in Google Search advertising slowed to 12% year over year during the third quarter. This reflects a downward trajectory when compared to the 17% growth recorded in the second quarter and the 19% growth achieved in the first quarter of the year. This steady drop puts heightened strategic importance on monetizing new AI user experiences effectively.

Q3 Financial Snapshot & Division Highlights

  • Alphabet Total Revenue: $127.6 billion (Up 25% year over year)
  • Google Search Revenue Growth: 12% YoY (Down from 17% in Q2 and 19% in Q1)
  • Google Services Revenue: $96.3 billion (Up 11% year over year)
  • Google Cloud Revenue: $30.7 billion (Surged 103% year over year)

While the broader Google Services unit generated $96.3 billion in revenue (an 11% increase year over year), Google Cloud saw massive growth, surging 103% to reach $30.7 billion for the quarter. However, because traditional search ads remain the financial backbone of the enterprise, turning AI-driven search experiences into steady revenue streams has become a core priority.

Global Expansion of AI Monetization & New Formats

To address changing monetization dynamics, Google is scaling high-quality commercial placements within its AI experiences. Philipp Schindler, Google’s Chief Business Officer, announced during the investor call that the company is taking its AI monetization strategy global for the first time.

This global rollout encompasses bringing ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode to international users, alongside introducing multi-turn conversational ads and expanding AI Mode features within the United States. The movement expands upon initial Gemini-powered advertising formats unveiled earlier in May, which introduced conversational discovery ads capable of answering follow-up user questions and sponsored recommendations embedded inside AI-generated responses.

“We are now scaling high-quality ads within AI overviews in AI mode to more users and queries. This includes taking our monetization footprint global for the first time. Today, we’re announcing the expansion of ads in AI mode into international markets alongside multi-turn ads and AI mode in the U.S.” — Philipp Schindler, Chief Business Officer

Early indicators suggest these new ad formats are performing well. According to Schindler, click-through rates (CTRs) for sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable to those observed for organic listings. Furthermore, internal user research from Google indicates that consumers find these integrated commercial links relevant to their complex search journeys.

Evolving Search Dynamics and User Interactions

Despite the slowing growth rate in ad spending, overall Search activity is expanding rapidly. Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed investors that Search queries grew at their fastest year-over-year rate in five years, though specific numerical growth percentages were not disclosed. Pichai attributed this acceleration directly to generative AI tools, which are fundamentally reshaping how people interact with Search.

Users are shifting away from short keyword searches toward longer, more descriptive queries. Queries submitted in AI Mode are now three times longer on average than traditional keyword searches. Furthermore, multimodal capabilities are becoming mainstream across global markets.

Key AI Search Interaction Trends

  • Query Length Expansion: AI Mode queries are 3x longer on average compared to traditional search inputs.
  • Multimodal Search Adoption: 1 in 5 AI Mode searches globally utilizes voice, images, or uploaded documents.
  • Visual Search Scale: Google has crossed 50 billion visual searches performed per month.

“[Search] is bringing the benefits of AI to more people than any other product in the world. People are using our AI features more, searching in entirely new ways. Their queries are longer, personalized, and multimodal.” — Sundar Pichai, CEO

This monetization shift arrives alongside broader progress across Google’s technical and hardware portfolio. The busy quarter included the rollout of the Gemini 4 Argon model, the growth of the standalone Gemini app to 1 billion monthly active users, and the hardware release of the Pixel 11 product lineup. As user habits continue to transition toward multimodal and conversational queries, Google’s global rollout of AI ads marks a pivotal moment in its ongoing efforts to commercialize next-generation search tools.
